Access San Miguel County Clerk Records

San Miguel County Combined Court Clerk records are handled through Colorado's state court system, not through a county district clerk office. A San Miguel County Combined Court Clerk records search starts with docket details, then moves to a document request when copies, certified orders, probate papers, or divorce decrees are needed. The County Clerk and Recorder is a separate county office for recorded documents, elections, motor vehicle work, and marriage licenses, so court case files must be requested from the court side.

San Miguel County Combined Court Clerk

The San Miguel Combined Courts clerk function is part of the Colorado Judicial Branch San Miguel County court. The office supports District Court and County Court matters at the courthouse in Telluride. It is the records contact for court case files, docket questions, certified court copies, probate documents, divorce case documents, criminal case filings, civil judgments, and the Register of Action when a releasable copy is available.

This local structure matters because San Miguel County also has a County Clerk and Recorder. The county's Clerk and Recorder page states that the County Clerk is not the Clerk of the Court. That county office handles recording, marriage licenses, elections, motor vehicle licensing, and liquor licenses. Court pleadings, sentencing orders, divorce decrees, probate letters, and court traffic records should not be routed there unless the record is a recorded instrument or marriage license.

San Miguel County Clerk Duties

The Combined Court Clerk maintains court-facing records for the state trial courts located in San Miguel County. The clerk does not create a county-run case database like some states use. Public access moves through the statewide docket search, the statewide record/document request form, the local clerk counter, phone, and email. The same courthouse houses District Court and County Court, so the clerk may be the point of contact for many case types even when the legal division is different.

  • Accepts requests for court documents such as complaints, orders, judgments, divorce decrees, probate letters, tickets, and Register of Action copies.
  • Processes certified and exemplified copy requests when a court record is eligible for release.
  • Collects court copy, search, certification, retrieval, research, and redaction fees set by the Colorado Judicial Branch.
  • Routes restricted files for access review when juvenile, suppressed, probate, family, or protected information may be involved.
  • Supports docket, payment, jury, and courtroom access questions for San Miguel Combined Courts.

Visitors should also account for the courthouse layout. The Combined Court Clerk, probation, and courtrooms are on the second floor. The County Clerk and Recorder, District Attorney, and Treasurer are on the first floor. A rear-door wheelchair lift is the local accessibility detail identified by the court location page.

Request San Miguel Certified Copies

Certified copies are used when the copy must show that it came from the court record. Examples include a divorce decree, disposition and sentence order, transcript of judgment, satisfaction of judgment, probate letters, or an order needed by another agency. The Colorado Judicial record/document request form is the main online request channel for San Miguel County court documents.

  1. Select San Miguel County on the Judicial Branch request form, or use the unknown-county option if the county is not known.
  2. Enter party names, date of birth if known, case number if available, and other details that help the clerk locate the file.
  3. Choose the document category, such as family, criminal, civil, probate, or other documents, and mark whether certification or exemplification is needed.
  4. Submit the request online, or contact San Miguel Combined Courts by phone or email if the request needs local clarification.
  5. Pay copy, certification, name-search, retrieval, or research fees when the court gives the amount due.

Note: Suppressed cases, juvenile records, probate files, or documents with confidential information may require U.S. government-issued photo identification before release.

San Miguel Records Request Fields

The court request form is built around identifying the case and the exact document. A name alone may not be enough if the same person appears in more than one matter. Case numbers, hearing dates, document names, and the legal division all help the Combined Court Clerk distinguish one San Miguel County file from another.

County Clerk Recording Records

The County Clerk and Recorder is still important for San Miguel County records, but not for court case files. The county recording page says recorded documents from 1875 to current are available online for free public viewing, with real property records also available for purchase through the County Recorder website. Copy requests can be made by phone or by email to recording@sanmiguelcountyco.gov.

That office is at 305 W. Colorado Avenue, first floor, Telluride. The USPS mailing address is P.O. Box 548, Telluride, CO 81435-0548. Recording and marriage-license hours are Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m., closed Friday. It accepts cash or check for marriage and many copy services. The Norwood motor vehicle office has a separate schedule and does not function as the court clerk.

The county marriage acknowledgment form is a good example of the split. It helps start a marriage-license process, but divorce decrees and domestic relations orders remain District Court records requested from the Combined Court Clerk.

Mail, Online, and Counter Access

San Miguel County court records can be reached through several channels. The free docket search gives hearing and schedule information. The record/document request form is the document-copy channel. The clerk counter provides in-person help during public hours. Phone and email are useful when a person needs to confirm whether a Friday appearance, restricted record, or older file requires special handling.

For county administrative records outside the courts, San Miguel County provides a Colorado Open Records Act page and an open records request form. For sheriff reports, arrest records, booking video, photos, 911 calls, and body-worn camera media, use the Sheriff's criminal justice records request route instead of the court clerk.

The image below comes from the county's official Clerk and Recorder page, which is useful precisely because it shows the separate county records office.
